The NEBOSH International Diploma covers four units that together build the advanced QHSE competency framework expected of senior HSE professionals. Unit A addresses the strategic management of health and safety — including legal frameworks, management systems, behavioural psychology, and organisational factors. Unit B covers hazardous agents — physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial — and the technical controls applied in occupational health management.
Unit C examines workplace and work equipment safety — covering construction, vehicles, machinery, electrical systems, fire, and emergency response at the advanced level. Unit D is the applied research assignment — the unit that most candidates find challenging because it requires integration of Units A, B, and C knowledge into a structured, evidence-based workplace investigation and improvement programme. This is where dedicated mentorship has the most significant impact on candidate performance.
